Porsche SUVs are the gold standard for luxury vehicles, with beautiful design inside and out and athletic performance. The 2026 Porsche Cayenne is the cream of the crop. This midsize SUV handles like a sports car and treats you to a lavish, customizable interior. The BMW X5 is also a refined midsize luxury SUV, but it falls short of the Cayenne in several areas. At Porsche Southampton, we have numerous Cayenne and Cayenne E-Hybrid models in our new inventory. To help you decide which SUV is a better fit for you, we've created the following comparison.
Performance
Engine/Power
The 2026 Porsche Cayenne comes standard with a turbocharged 340-horsepower six-cylinder engine, but three V8 motors are available, including a twin-turbocharged version in Turbo GT models that produces 650 horsepower. Commuters to East Hampton will appreciate that the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT can rocket from zero to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds.
The 2026 BMW X5's base engine is a turbocharged 375-horsepower inline-six. However, it's most muscular motor only generates 523 horsepower. It takes 3.6 seconds to get from zero to 60 mph with the X5's strongest powertrain.
If you'd prefer a more efficient electrified Porsche model, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid puts out a combined 729 horsepower with its strongest engine. This version, called the Turbo E-Hybrid, can bolt from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
The BMW xDrive50e plug-in hybrid makes 483 horsepower and has a zero to 60 mph sprint of 3.9 seconds.
Towing Capacity
If you need to pull a camper or a boat to Riverhead, the 2026 Porsche Cayenne is more effective. It can tow up to 7,716 pounds when properly equipped.
The 2026 BMW X5 has a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.
Interior
Seating
Both the 2026 Porsche Cayenne and the 2026 BMW X5 have spacious, attractive interiors with plush seating for five.
Cargo Space
The 2026 Porsche Cayenne has ample cargo space for most driver's needs, with 60.3 cubic feet of room when the rear seats are folded down. Residents of Suffolk will like the standard hands-free liftgate for easy loading when their hands are full.
The 2026 BMW X5 has 72.3 cubic feet of cargo space with its back seats folded. However, a hands-free liftgate doesn't come standard, so you'd have to pay more to add it.
Technology/Infotainment
You'll want a feature-rich infotainment system to keep you engaged and entertained on long drives from Patchogue. The 2026 Porsche Cayenne comes with a 12.6-inch digital gauge cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. An available 10.9-inch passenger display allows your copilot to perform some functions.
The 2026 BMW X5 has a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. However, a passenger-side display is not available in the X5.
Safety
The 2026 Porsche Cayenne has not yet been crash tested by any U.S. agencies yet, but it is packed with standard driver assistance features such as forward collision mitigation, blind-spot warning, and lane departure mitigation. Southampton drivers will like its road sign assistance technology, which detects certain road signs and displays them on the instrument panel for a heads-up about speed limit changes, dips, or other notifications.
The 2026 BMW X5 is also loaded with advanced active safety features, but road sign assistance is not available.
